Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has rejected President Donald Trump's assertion that "Canada lives because of the United States."

"Canada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership in the economy, in security, and in a rich cultural exchange," Carney said on Thursday while speaking in Plains of Abraham, Québec, during a cabinet retreat. 

"But Canada doesn’t ‘live because of the United States’," he said, referencing Trump's remark. "Canada thrives because we are Canadian. We are masters in our own house. This is our country. This is our future. The choice is ours."

In response to Fox News Digital's request for comment, the White House pointed to Trump's Truth Social post.

On Thursday, Trump published an open letter to Carney informing him that Canada's invitation to join the Board of Peace — a U.S.-led council tasked with managing Gaza's post-war future — had been rescinded.

"Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The board was inaugurated in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, though Carney had already left, according to The Associated Press.

Tensions between Carney and Trump flared as world leaders met in Davos for the annual World Economic Forum. Both Trump and Carney took swipes at each other in their respective speeches.

During his address on Tuesday, Carney did not mention Trump by name, but rather he said that "rules-based order is fading," referencing the U.S.

He admitted that there were benefits to US. leadership on the world stage, but painted the entire concept of a rules-based international order as a falsity that is actively failing. Additionally, in his address, Carney urged middle powers, like Canada, to assert themselves and take the opportunity to "build a new order that embodies our values."

When delivering his address on Wednesday, Trump did not shy away from taking aim at Carney. He said that Canada "should be grateful" because the country gets "a lot of freebies" from the U.S., though he did not say what he was referring to.

"I watched your prime minister yesterday, he wasn't so grateful," Trump said. "Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements."

The friction between Trump and Carney underscored a growing rift between the two. In his address to a cabinet retreat, Carney framed it as a moment for Canada to assert its own power and build a future based on its own values.

Passengers aboard a taxiing aircraft were reportedly left horrified last month when chilling screams suddenly echoed from beneath the cabin just moments before takeoff.  

According to the officials, a ground crew member became trapped inside the plane’s cargo hold when doors "inadvertently closed" behind him, according to local station CBC. 

The incident happened on Dec. 13 when Air Canada Flight 1502 was preparing to depart Toronto Pearson Airport for Moncton, New Brunswick, the outlet said. 

The Airbus flight, which was carrying 184 passengers, was ultimately canceled following the incident.

Passengers told CBC that distressing sounds of muffled banging and desperate screams quickly filled the rear of the aircraft as it began taxiing toward the runway, prompting flight attendants to sprint down the aisle in alarm.

"Some of the people that were sitting towards the back of the plane heard the person screaming and banging, trying to get their attention," passenger Gabrielle Caron said. 

"We could see the crew gathering around the plane, so we knew something was happening," she added. "Then, the pilot tells us that there is someone from the crew in the luggage hold."

The aircraft reportedly halted before reaching the runway. Moments later, the trapped ground crew member emerged safely from the cargo and entered the cabin, reassuring shaken passengers that he was unharmed, Caron reported. 

Air Canada confirmed to CBC that no injuries were reported in the incident. 

Caron added that the crew member involved was reportedly assisting ground staff by loading items as an extra set of hands and may have been left unaccounted for when the doors closed.

The plane eventually returned to the terminal, where passengers were asked to disembark while the flight crew completed necessary paperwork, CBC reported.

The flight was ultimately canceled after several delays, the outlet said.

Firefighters rescued a dog from a burning home in Canada on Saturday morning after the family pet accidentally started a fire by chewing on a battery-powered glove, authorities said.

Ottawa Fire Services said crews were dispatched just after 9 a.m. to a home in Orléans after a monitoring company reported an active fire alarm.

The homeowner, who was on the way to the house, confirmed through interior security cameras that a fire was burning inside. Several passing motorists also called 911 to report flames visible in the residence.

Firefighters arrived within four minutes and found heavy smoke and flames venting from a first-floor bay window. Crews launched an aggressive attack, knocking down flames that had breached the window before entering the home to continue extinguishment efforts.

Firefighters searched the house and found a dog, carrying it safely outside. The pet was not injured, and no people were inside at the time of the fire, officials said.

Officials declared the fire under control at 9:23 a.m., about 10 minutes after crews arrived, preventing further spread. Two searches confirmed no people were inside.

An Ottawa Fire Services investigator determined the fire started after the family dog chewed on a heated skiing glove containing a lithium-ion battery. Security camera footage showed the dog pulling the glove onto a couch, damaging the battery, which then ignited.

Fire officials warned that lithium-ion batteries can pose serious fire risks if damaged and urged residents to store battery-powered items safely and keep them away from pets and children.
