A man speaking intently is shown alongside a young girl in a white dress, with her hands clasped in a thoughtful pose.

Woke Texas state Rep. James Talarico, the Democrat nominee for U.S. Senate, is facing renewed scrutiny over past ridiculous remarks about God, gender, and so-called transgender youth. During a 2021 debate over so-called transgender legislation in the Texas House, Talarico declared on the floor that “God is non-binary,” a line that has since gone viral in conservative media and on social platforms.

In recent interviews with CBS News and ABC News, he has said the phrase was “intentionally provocative” and insisted he meant that God transcends human categories and cannot be confined to human notions of male and female, even though, the bible clearly refers to God the Father, The Son and Holy Spirit as He. To defend that botched view, Talarico has repeatedly cited the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians, saying that in Christ “there is neither male nor female,” and arguing it points to God has no gender.

Conservative commentators and theologians, however, accuse him of twisting Galatians 3:28 and effectively taking issue with Paul’s broader teaching on sex and gender roles, calling the claim that God is non-binary is a form of modern “gender ideology” applied to Scripture.

Separately, in a 2021 discussion of so-called transgender athletes, Talarico argued that “modern science acknowledges six biological variations based on chromosomes,” a comment Republicans now summarize as his believing in “six genders” or “six biological sexes.” He has also drawn attention for saying in an interview clip, “I love trans kids,” a line that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton mocked in his Senate primary victory speech as “weird” when he told supporters that, asked what he loved beyond family and friends, Talarico’s “first answer was trans kids.”

Paxton’s first general-election ad for his Senate campaign, shared widely as a video on Instagram and other platforms under the tagline “Radical Talarico: too low-T for Texas,” strings together footage of Talarico saying God is non-binary, discussing six sex variations, and promoting vegan campaign purchases to paint him as culturally out of step with Texas. Talarico has responded that Paxton is clipping his “cringey” past comments to distract from what he calls the Republican’s “career of corruption,” while weakly walking back some specifics by affirming that there are two sexes, male and female, and emphasizing that people with chromosomal variations should be treated with dignity and respect.

A woman in a red hijab speaks at a podium while an enthusiastic crowd in white celebrates, showcasing diversity and engagement in a public event.

Cringe woke Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wore a red patterned hijab while addressing an Eid al-Adha celebration at Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx on May 27, 2026, standing on stage alongside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani, New York City’s first Muslim mayor, also wore a kurta styled like Arsenal soccer jersey and told the crowd, “I am honored to be New York City’s first Muslim Mayor and I am determined to lead through solidarity; together, we are working to ensure every New Yorker can afford the groceries, housing, and child care they need.”

Footage and captions from the event describe Ocasio-Cortez as speaking about “solidarity” with Muslim New Yorkers while she delivered brief remarks during the holiday gathering stating followers need to “renew our commitments to one another,” to “bring light into darkness.” In later comments reported by outlets covering the controversy, she defended her decision to wear the headscarf, calling it “the respectful move” toward constituents observing the festival.

Viral clips shared by outlets like show groups of men at the Eid celebration talking among themselves and appearing to ignore the hijab-clad congresswoman as she speaks from the stage. Some commentators highlighted the scene of a largely male audience speaking over her as evidence of a clash between the progressive lawmaker’s feminist branding and gender norms in Muslim doctrine.

On X and Instagram, conservative and anti-woke accounts amplified the video, with one widely shared post quoted in NerdStash reading, “What a fraud! Bought and paid for!” Ynet reported critics mocking Ocasio-Cortez for, in their words, “screaming about patriarchy while cosplaying in a garment mandated by brutal theocracies” as they circulated the clip.

Other viral posts roasted her appearance as “political cosplay” and accused her of “pandering in a hijab” at the event with Mamdani, with one caption declaring, “NY HAS FALLEN” above the footage.
