Das Batterie-Gemeinschaftsunternehmen ACC hat seine geplante Gigafactory in Kaiserslautern nun endgültig gestrichen. Hunderte Millionen Euro Steuergeld sollten fließen – doch die Nachfrage nach E-Autos bleibt weit hinter den Erwartungen zurück und das Unternehmen lohnt sich im teuren Deutschland schlichtweg nicht. Der grüne Traum einer unabhängigen europäischen Batterieproduktion verpufft.
Das europäische Batterie-Joint-Venture Automotive Cells Company (ACC) hat die Pläne für eine große Batteriezellenfabrik in Kaiserslautern (Rheinland-Pfalz) offiziell aufgegeben. Auch das Schwesterprojekt in Termoli (Italien) ist vom Tisch. Das Unternehmen gab am Samstag (7. Februar) bekannt, dass die Voraussetzungen für einen Neustart der seit Mai 2024 pausierten Vorhaben voraussichtlich nicht erfüllt werden. Gespräche mit Betriebsräten und Gewerkschaften über eine Einstellung der Projekte seien bereits angelaufen.
ACC – ein Gemeinschaftsunternehmen von Stellantis (größter Anteilseigner), Mercedes-Benz und TotalEnergies – wollte mit den Gigafactories die europäische Abhängigkeit von asiatischen Batterieherstellern reduzieren. Ursprünglich waren drei Fabriken geplant. In Kaiserslautern sollten Batterien für rund 600.000 Elektroautos pro Jahr produziert werden. 2000 neue Arbeitsplätze sollten entstehen. Doch bereits im Mai 2024 hatte ACC den Bau in Deutschland und Italien vorläufig gestoppt. Nur das Werk in Billy-Berclau/Douvrin (Nordfrankreich), das bereits produziert, soll als „primärer Innovationshub“ bestehen bleiben.
Der Grund: Die Nachfrage nach Elektroautos in Europa entwickelt sich deutlich schwächer als erwartet. Dazu kommt der starke Aktienkurseinbruch bei Stellantis. Der Autobauer hatte in der vergangenen Woche Abschreibungen von 22,2 Milliarden Euro verbucht und angekündigt, seine Pläne für die Entwicklung von Elektrofahrzeugen deutlich zurückzufahren. Daraufhin waren die Aktien des Konzerns um 25,2 Prozent eingebrochen.
Deutschland und Frankreich hatten der ACC Fördermittel in Höhe von 1,3 Milliarden Euro zugesagt – allein der deutsche Standort sollte mit Steuergeld in Höhe von rund 437 Millionen Euro unterstützt werden. Im September 2021 hatten der damalige Bundeswirtschaftsminister Peter Altmaier (CDU) und die rheinland-pfälzische Ministerpräsidentin Malu Dreyer (SPD) den entsprechenden Förderbescheid überreicht.
Die Nachricht traf die Region Kaiserslautern hart. Die Batteriefabrik galt als große Hoffnung auf zukunftsfähige Industrie-Jobs. Der Betriebsratsvorsitzende von ACC Deutschland, Florian Krapf, erklärte, er sei “sehr enttäuscht und frustriert” – immerhin seien bereits 90 Mitarbeiter für den Aufbau des Werks eingestellt worden.
Jörg Köhlinger, Bezirksleiter der IG Metall Mitte, nannte die Entscheidung “irrational und verantwortungslos”. Die ganze Region sei schockiert. Resiliente Lieferketten würden so nicht entstehen.
Ministerpräsident Alexander Schweitzer (SPD) nannte die Entscheidung von ACC “bedauerlich – auch für den Standort Deutschland und Rheinland-Pfalz”. Und das sicherlich auch im Hinblick darauf, dass der Chemiekonzern BASF, der größte Arbeitgeber des Bundeslandes, gerade rund 8,7 Milliarden Euro in ein Werk in China investiert hat – der neue Verbundstandort soll im März eröffnet werden.
Das ACC-Aus ist auch nicht der einzige Rückschlag bei europäischen Batterieprojekten: Northvolt ist insolvent und Porsche Cellforce hat seine Pläne für Hochleistungszellen eingestampft. Die europäische Industrie kämpft mit hohen Energiepreisen, bürokratischen Hürden und der übermächtigen Konkurrenz aus China, wo Batteriezellen deutlich günstiger produziert werden – und das gilt nicht nur für Batteriezellen …
